  • Notes
    • EUNICE MARCEL HORRY née GEALE 1906-1980
      alias EUNICE MAY TAYLOR

Eunice Marcel, the daughter of Edwin GEALE and his wife Ruby née MUNRO, was born in 1915. Her parents had married in 1914.
The register records her later family name TAYLOR to which she changed her name by deed poll in 1967.
      (NZ BMDs 1914/1094)
      (NZ BMDs 1915/23659)

From the 1938 Electoral Roll of Roskill, Auckland S1, New Zealand:
GEALE, Eunice Marcel, 45 Peary Road, spinster

On 12 December 1942 Charles Cecil HORRY married Eunice Marcel GEALE. The public wedding took place in the radio theatre 1ZB Auckland, where the popular religious programme the 'Friendly Road' was conducted. The officiating minister was the host of the program, Thomas GARLAND, known as 'Uncle Tom'.

From the 1946 and 1949 Electoral Roll of Waitakere, Auckland, New Zealand:
HORRY, Eunice Marcel, 1237 New North Rd, married
HORRY, George Cecil, 1237 New North Road, tailor

From the 1949 Electoral Roll of Mount Albert, Auckland SW1, New Zealand:
HORRY Eunice Marcel, 20 Aroha Ave, married
HORRY George Cecil, 20 Aroha Ave, married

From the 1954 Electoral Roll of Mount Albert, Auckland SW1, New Zealand:
HORRY Eunice Marcel, 20 Aroha Ave, married (E)

From the 1957 Electoral Roll Mt Albert, Auckland SW1, New Zealand:
HORRY Eunice Marcel, 20 Aroha Ave., married (E)

Her death was registered under the name of Eunice May (sic) TAYLOR in 1980. The date of birth on the death registration would appear to be fictitious as it is exactly the same as that of her husband. Presumably they gave the same date of birth when changing their name by deed poll after George Cecil HORRY's release from prison in 1967.

According to her great niece Karen LASH, Eunice Marcel GEALE died aged 101 on 13 January 101.

      NOTES & QUERIES:
The index to the New Zealand Electoral Rolls list George Cecil HORRY and Eunice Marcel HORRY at Chalmers, Otago, in 1928. This would appear to be an indexing error rather than a final twist in the tale of the downfall of George Cecil HORRY.

"He [George Cecil HORRY alias TAYLOR] died at Auckland on 29 April 1981, survived by his wife Eunice; their only child, a daughter, had been killed in a car accident some years earlier."
      (Dictionary of New Zealand Biography)

If George Cecil HORRY falsified his wife's death certificate in 1980 what was his motive? Was he planning to kill her? He would have a perfect defence because she was already "dead" and would not be missed.
