      Martha Ellen TAYLOR was born at Long Sutton in Lincolnshire on 30 May 1841, daughter of John TAYLOR, a mariner, and his wife Mary Ellen of Long Sutton.

      John TAYLOR had married Mary Eleanor SKINNER in 1839.

      She was baptised at Long Sutton on 27 June 1841.

      The 1861 census of Tydd St. Giles has been lost (CFHS).

      Until his death on 19 October 1868 she was one of the three servants of Squire Joseph HANNATH of Tydd St. Giles. He left her 19 guineas in his will "I give and bequeath unto each of my three Servants now living with me (namely) Martha TAYLOR Ruth WAITE and William FOLKES the legacy or sum of nineteen Guineas".

      She married James EDGOOSE by licence at Walsoken Parish Church, Norfolk, on 17 September 1868. James EDGOOSE was a mariner from Walsoken and probably one of her father's fellow seamen.

      Martha Ellen TAYLOR's younger sister married James E. ANDERSON in 1864. His daughter Sarah ANDERSON married SHARPE, governor of Holloway Prison in London. Martha used to make shirts for the ANDERSONs and spend a month's holiday in London every year. It was SHARPE who got James EDGOOSE a job as a prison warder at Pentonville.

      In 1881 she was living at 22 Cirencester Street, Bishopwearmouth, County Durham:

      *Martha E. EDGOOSE, wife, aged 39, engine man's wife, born at Sutton Bridge, Lincoln;
      John H. EDGOOSE, son, aged 4, born at Shiney Row, County Durham;
      John TAYLOR, visitor, aged 44, mariner, born at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire (presumably Martha ELLEN's brother).

      In 1891 James EDGOOSE was living at 7 Duke Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, with his wife Martha EDGOOSE. He was 52 years old, employed as a stoker on a steamship, born at Gedney in Lincolnshire. His wife was 49 years old, born at Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire. Their son John was a 14 year old scholar born at Pensher in Co. Durham and their 9 year old daughter Elizabeth was a scholar born at Sunderland, Co. Durham (RG12/4128/9/9).

      Some time after the death of James EDGOOSE in 1895 she worked for five years as caretaker of the Franklin Street Methodist Church in Sunderland in order to support her family. In return she was allowed to live in the chapel house.

      According to the 1901 census of 1 Franklin Street, Sunderland, she was born at Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire. Living at the same address were her Sunderland born children John EDGOOSE, 24, a marine engineer, and 19 year old dressmaker Elizabeth EDGOOSE.

      Sarah Annie EDGOOSE, head, aged 30, married 8 years, 2 children of which 2 living, born at Sunderland, Co. Durham;
      John Holborn EDGOOSE, son, aged 7, born at Sunderland, Co. Durham;
      *James Henry EDGOOSE, son, aged 5, born at Sunderland, Co. Durham;
      Martha Ellen EDGOOSE, mother-in-law, aged 69, widow, born at Long Sutton, Lincolnshire.

      She lived at 23 Croft Avenue, Sunderland, for 18 years until 1922 when the family moved to Easington.

      Although left a widow when her eldest surviving son was only 17 she was, according to her grandson James Henry EDGOOSE, a thrifty woman who even managed to leave some money when she died.

      She died on 16 January 1926 aged 84.

      She was buried in Easington Colliery Cemetery.
