    Elizabeth Edgoose (1881-1957) married William Wood (1882-1939) at Sunderland, County Durham, in 1910. She was buried in Newbottle Churchyard, County Durham. Her death was registered under the name Elizabeth M. WOOD. Does the M stand for Martha, her mother's Christian name?
    The younger of their two sons, also named William, was awarded the OBE for services to medicine because of his work on the Salk polio vaccine in Canada.

      Elizabeth EDGOOSE was born at 22 Cirencester Street, Sunderland, County Durham, on 10 September 1881, daughter of James and Martha Ellen EDGOOSE.

      James EDGOOSE had married Martha Ellen TAYLOR at Walsoken, Norfolk, on 17 September 1868.

      She was baptised at Deptford, County Durham, on 2 October 1881.

      In 1891 the family was living at 7 Duke Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland:
      James EDGOOSE, head, aged 52, stoker on steamship, born at Gedney, Lincolnshire;
      Martha EDGOOSE, wife, aged 49, born at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire;
      John EDGOOSE, son, aged 14, scholar, born at Pensher in Co. Durham;

      School records show that Elizabeth EDGOOSE was admitted to the Bede Higher Grade School - Girls in Sunderland on 9 June 1894. Her date of birth was given as 10 September 1881. Her father was Jas. EDGOOSE of 19 Duke Street. Her previous education was listed as Diamond Hall Board School. Highest standard at last school was VI. She left on 16 January 1895.

      In the 1901 census of 1 Franklin Street, Sunderland, she is listed as a 19 year old dressmaker. At the same address were her mother Martha EDGOOSE and 24 year old brother John EDGOOSE, a marine engineer.

      She married William WOOD at the United Methodist Church, Franklin Street, Sunderland, on 26 February 1910. William WOOD was a 28 year old bachelor, an engine fitter, of 35 Success Cottages, Newbottle, and son of Thomas WOOD, plumber. Elizabeth EDGOOSE was a 28 year old spinster of 23 Croft Avenue, Chester Road, Sunderland. Witnesses were John H. EDGOOSE and Mary Ethel WOOD.

      The 1911 census of 2 Brompton Terrace, Philadelphia, Fence Houses, Durham:
      William WOOD, head, aged 29, locomotive fitter, born at Penshaw, Durham;
      *Elizabeth WOOD, wife, aged 29, married 1 year, no children, born at Sunderland, Durham.

      They had two sons, Thomas and William. The latter, a doctor, was supposedly responsible for the British version of the Salk polio vaccine for which he was awarded the OBE and at one time lived at 4 Russell way, Petersfield.

      She lived at 2 Brompton Terrace, Newbottle, County Durham, with her husband, a colliery engineer.

      William WOOD died on 26 February 1939 aged 57.
