  • Notes
    • PATIENCE EDGOOSE nee HUDSON 1817-1906

      Patience HUDSON was born at West Walton, Norfolk, on 5 January 1817 and baptised on 12 January, daughter of Frances and William HUDSON. A West Walton farmer, William HUDSON, had married Frances YERRELL at West Walton on 22 October 1812.

      Patience HUDSON and William BRITTNEY witnessed the marriage of Thomas LISTER, bachelor, of Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire, to Sarah BRITTNEY, spinster, of Wisbech St. Peter at Wisbech St. Peter on 26 November 1833.
      (CFHS Register Transcript)

      She married Stanton EDGOOSE at West Walton on 31 October 1835. Witnesses were Mary Ann OLDFIELD and Joseph OLDFIELD. (The Norfolk Marriage Index 1801-1837 has Sporle, Norfolk, as the parish where the marriage took place).

      She and Stanton EDGOOSE witnessed the will of her brother-in-law Joseph OLDFIELD on 12 February 1839.
      (Norwich Archdeaconry Wills 1840-3)

      The 1841 census of Dam Drove, West Walton, Norfolk, taken on 6 June:
      Stanton EDGOOSE, aged 30, farmer, born in Norfolk;
      *Patience EDGOOSE, aged 25, born in Norfolk;
      Patience EDGOOSE, aged 3, born in Norfolk;
      Naomi EDGOOSE, aged 15 months, born in Norfolk;
      Ruth EDGOOSE, aged 7 days, born in Norfolk;
      Mary Ann OLDFIELD, aged 20, nurse, born in Norfolk;
      Sarah BAXTER, aged 20, female servant, born in Norfolk.
      (HO107/770/13/11/12)

      Her address was Little South Street, Wisbech St. Peter, on the birth certificates of her sons Charles EDGOOSE in 1849 and William EDGOOSE in 1850.

      William lived for only fifteen days: "WISBECH. An inquest was held at the Crown Tavern, on Tuesday last, before Mr. Wm. PRATT, on the body of an infant son of Mrs. EDGOOSE, of West Walton, who had died on Sunday morning, at Mrs. NAPE's, in Timbermarket, under whose care it had been placed. It appeared in evidence that the child died from natural causes, and a verdict to that effect was returned" (Cambridge Chronicle 9 November 1850).

      From the 1851 census returns for Borroughfield, West Walton, Norfolk:
      *Patience EDGOOSE, head, aged 34, farmer of 35 acres employing one labourer, born at West Walton;
      Patience EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 12, at home, born at West Walton;
      Naomi EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 10, at home, born at West Walton;
      Ruth EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 9, scholar, born at West Walton;
      Mary EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 8, scholar, born at West Walton;
      Stanton EDGOOSE, son, aged 7, scholar, born at West Walton;
      James EDGOOSE, son, aged 4, born at West Walton.
      (HO 107/1766/577/9)

      Six of her twelve children were born after the death of her husband on 17 March 1845. It has been suggested that the father was her brother-in-law Robert EDGOOSE whose wife had died on 24 April 1842, but it has also been said that the father of Benjamin EDGOOSE in particular (and presumably of his twin sister Selina) was a member of the neighbouring BATTERHAM family (See letter from Bertha CURTIS nee EDGOOSE 1887-1967 dated 28 March 1967). The father of Charles, William, and Benjamin John is a matter for conjecture, but DNA evidence in February 2006 proved conclusively that the father of James EDGOOSE 1847-1892 was Stanton EDGOOSE's eldest brother Robert EDGOOSE 1798-1870.

      Benjamin John EDGOOSE was less than two years old when he died: "West Walton ...On Thursday, an inquest was held at the same place, before Mr. PRESS, coroner, on the body of a child of Mr. EDGOOSE, farmer. The poor little thing was about a year and a half old; it got into the yard where there was a vessel filled with water, fell in, and was drowned. - Verdict, Accidental Death."
      (Cambridge Chronicle 29 October 1853)

      Between 1854 and 1867 there are entries in the West Walton Highway Rate Books under the heading 'Team Work Executed By Contract':
      1854-1855 Mrs. P. EDGOOSE - Church End Road 2 days @ 6/-
      1857-1858 EDGOOSE, Mrs., Gravell 7.1/2 tons Tottenhill, Church End repairing roads 5/-
      1866-1867 EDGOOSE, Mrs., Gravel 86 yards drawn from Dam House for repairing roads @ Church End 1/- = 4.6.0
      Date unrecorded: BUCK & EDGOOSE 3 days silt carting 105 tons @ 7d.

      Patience EDGOOSE, farmer, is listed at West Walton in directories from 1854 until 1896. Apparently the 1863 directory was the first to indicate that the family actually owned the farm.

      The 1861 census of Dam Lane, West Walton, Norfolk:
      *Patience EDGOOSE, head, aged 44, widow, born at West Walton, Norfolk;
      Mary EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 18, born at West Walton;
      Stanton EDGOOSE, son, aged 16, born at West Walton;
      James EDGOOSE, son, aged 14, born at West Walton;
      Benjamin EDGOOSE, son, aged 7, born at West Walton;
      Serena EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 7, born at West Walton.
      (RG9/1050/72/8)

      The Post Office Directory of Cambs, Norfolk & Suffolk, 1869, lists Mrs. Patience EDGOOSE, farmer, at West Walton.

      The 1871 census of Dam Road, West Walton:
      *Patience EDGOOSE, head, aged 54, farmer of 35 acres employing 1 agricultural labourer, born at West Walton;

      Benjamin EDGOOSE, son, aged 16, born at West Walton;
      Serena EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 16, born at West Walton.
      (RG10/1617/76/8)

      The Post Office Directory of Cambs, Norfolk & Suffolk, 1875, lists Mrs. Patience EDGOOSE, farmer; James EDGOOSE, market gardener; and Stanton EDGOOSE, farmer, at West Walton.

      Harrod & Co.'s Royal Location Directory of Norfolk and Lowestoft 1877 lists Mrs. Patience EDGOOSE, farmer and landowner, at West Walton.

      At the time of the 1881 census she was staying with her daughter SERENA PRATT at 1 Trafalgar Row, Wisbech St. Peter, Cambridgeshire. SERENA's son was just 13 days old.
      William PRATT, head, aged 24, railway horseman, born at Terrington, Norfolk;
      Serena PRATT, wife, aged 26, born at West Walton, Norfolk;
      Mary Serena PRATT, daughter, aged 2, born at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire;

      *Patience EDGOOSE, mother-in-law, aged 64, widow, born at West Walton;
      John Stanton BATTERHAM, boarder, unmarried, aged 23, coal merchant, born at West Walton.
      (RG11/1696/54/1)

      William White's History, Directory, and Gazetteer of Norfolk 1883 lists Mrs. Patience EDGOOSE, farmer, at West Walton.

      From The Guardian newspaper, 9 January 1889:
      "SPECIAL TRAINING
      Help in Reading for H.O. wanted. Could give experienced parochial assistance. Title. -Z., Mrs. P. EDGOOSE, West Walton, Wisbech."
      (Polly Rubery of the Guild interpreted this: "H.O. = Holy Orders. Reading for them would be reading Theology at University. I would think that "Title - Z" refers to the person looking for the help, Mrs E being a relative or professional poste restante agent."

      The History, Gazetteer & Directory of Norfolk 1890 lists Mrs. Patience EDGOOSE, farmer, at West Walton.

      From the 1891 census returns for Dam Road, West Walton:
      *Patience EDGOOSE, head, widow, aged 74, a farmer, born at West Walton;
      Mary MOWLES (sic), daughter, widow, aged 49, born at West Walton;
      Grace MOWLES, granddaughter, aged 18, schoolteacher, born at West Walton;
      Patience MOWLES, granddaughter, aged 16, schoolteacher, born at West Walton;
      Mary MOWLES, granddaughter, aged 15, born at West Walton.
      (RG12/1306/61/9)

      From Kelly's Directory of Cambridge, Norfolk and Suffolk, 1892:

      From the 1901 census of New Field, Tilney St. Lawrence, Norfolk:
      *Patience EDGOOSE, head, widow, aged 84, farmer, employer, born at West Walton, Norfolk;

      Mary Moules, granddaughter, single, aged 26, at home, born at West Walton, Norfolk;
      Julia EDGOOSE, granddaughter, single, aged 24, living on own means, born at Walsoken, Norfolk.
      (RG13/1558/87/5)

      Kelly's Directory of Norfolk 1904 lists Mrs. Patience EDGOOSE, farmer, at West Walton.

      She died on 23 August 1906 at The Yews, Tilney St. Lawrence aged 89. Her granddaughter Grace Agnes MOULES of the same address informed the registrar.
      (GRO September Q 1906 Wisbech 3b 315)

      She was buried at West Walton on 27 August. Isle of Ely Advertiser 29 August 1906: "At Tilney St. Lawrence, on August 23rd, Patience EDGOOSE, late of West Walton, aged 89 years". Her mourning card bore the message "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord".

      NOTES & QUERIES:
      Patience EDGOOSE's husband Stanton died on 17 March 1845 in the presence of Joseph BATTERHAM. Subsequently Patience gave birth to James (Great Grandfather of Michael James EDGOOSE) on 2 April 1847, Charles on 19 May 1849, William on 19 October 1850, Benjamin John on 19 May 1852, and twins Benjamin and Selina on 1 August 1854.

      Burt EDGOOSE told me that he thought Robert, Stanton's elder brother, whose wife Judith had died in April 1842, was the father. He certainly never remarried and thanks to the land and money which his wife inherited from her grandfather a few years before she died he was able to describe himself as an 'annuitant' or 'of independent means'. He may well have thought it his duty to look after Patience and her children. Whilst no documentary evidence has been found, DNA tests in February 2006 on Michael James EDGOOSE and John Samuel EDGOOSE proved conclusively that Robert EDGOOSE was the father of Patience's son James EDGOOSE.

      Before she died Bertha CURTIS (nee EDGOOSE) told me that as a young girl in West Walton she had heard a whisper that George BATTERHAM was the father of Benjamin. Impossible as it happens as he wasn't born until 1867! Raymond BENNETT told me in 1969 that the father of Benjamin and Selina was called BATTERHAM. Intriguingly, Joseph BATTERHAM was present when James EDGOOSE died and he informed the registrar. Joseph BATTERHAM married Mary Ann, the daughter of Joseph OLDFIELD who had married Stanton EDGOOSE's sister Ann in 1818, and had sons George BATTERHAM and John Stanton BATTERHAM. Of course this proves nothing, but it does prove that Joseph BATTERHAM and Patience EDGOOSE knew each other. Raymond BENNETT also told me that Patience was Joseph BATTERHAM's cousin.
