    • JUDITH LEWIN BYCROFT formerly HORRY nee EDGOOSE 1832-1914

      Judith Lewin EDGOOSE was born on 21 October 1832, daughter of Robert and Judith EDGOOSE, and baptised at West Walton, Norfolk, the same day. Robert EDGOOSE had married Judith LEWIN at Leverington, Cambridgeshire, on 22 October 1823.

      From the 1841 census returns for Church End, West Walton, Norfok:
      Robert EDGOOSE, aged 40, of independent means, born in Norfolk;
      Judith EDGOOSE, aged 30, born in Norfolk;
      *Judith EDGOOSE, aged 9, born in Norfolk;
      Mary EDGOOSE, aged 5, born in Norfolk;
      James EDGOOSE, aged 2, born in Norfolk;
      Ann NICHOLS, aged 55, of independent means, born in Norfolk.

      At the time of the 1851 census she was living at Little Newland Field, West Walton, Norfolk, with her father, brother and sister:

      She married Henry James HORRY at West Walton on 1 December 1852. Henry James HORRY was 23, a bachelor, and worked as a baker at Holbeach in Lincolnshire; his father, John HORRY, was also a baker. Witnesses were Robert EDGOOSE and Caroline BATES.

      White's 1856 Lincolnshire Directory lists Henry James HORRY as a baker at St. John Street, Holbeach.

      The 1861 census of Littlebury Place, Holbeach, Lincolnshire:
      Henry HORRY, head, aged 31, baker (master), born at Upwell, Norfolk;
      *Judith L. HORRY, wife, aged 28, born at West Walton, Norfolk;
      Robert John HORRY, son, aged 6, scholar, born at Holbeach;

      George HORRY, son, aged 3, born at Holbeach, Lincolnshire;
      John T. HORRY, son, aged 8 months, born at Holbeach;

      Henry James HORRY died on 6 October 1869 aged 39, leaving her with six young boys. In his will made on 14 May 1867 he bequeathed all his real and personal estate "unto my dear Wife Judith Lewin HORRY". (For a transcript of the will see under HORRY, Henry James).

      At the age of 9 her eldest son Robert HORRY used to help his mother in the bakehouse of the shop in St. John's Street, Holbeach.

      She married Richard BYCROFT, who supposedly had a coach and carriage hire business in Holbeach, at Holbeach Free Methodist Chapel on 18 August 1886. Richard BYCROFT was described as a gentleman, a 70 year old widower, and son of John BYCROFT deceased. Witnesses were R. BYCROFT and Susan FAULKNER.

      In the 1891 census returns for Fleet Street, Holbeach, Richard BYCROFT was described as a 75 year old retired farmer who had been born at North Willingham, Lincolnshire. His wife Judith L. BYCROFT, aged 58, "living on own means"; his 28 year old stepson Arthur HORRY of no occupation; and a 27 year old domestic servant Elizabeth D. YALLUP were also present.

      According to the 1901 census returns for Fleet Road, Holbeach, Lincolnshire, Judith L. BYCROFT was a 68 year old widow living on her own means who was born at West Walton, Norfolk. Also present were her son Arthur HORRY, aged 38, a Holbeach born commercial clerk, and her sister Mary A. L. EDGOOSE, aged 64, living on her own means.

      Robt. J. HORRY and E. HORRY were witnesses at the marriage of Elizabeth EDGOOSE to George TAYLOR at Holbeach on 31 August 1904.

      Judith L. BYCROFT died on 16 January 1914.

      She was buried in the cemetery at Park Lane, Holbeach, on 19 January. According to the inscription on the gravestone she died on 18 January.

      According to the Probate Indexes Judith Lewin BYCROFT of Holbeach, Lincolnshire, widow, died 16 January 1914. Probate Lincoln 9 April to Robert John HORRY, miller, and Henry James HORRY, baker. Effects - 1227 9s. 3d.

      In 1921 Mary Ann LEWIN EDGOOSE (1836-1921) made bequests to her "nephews Robert John HORRY of Holbeach and John Thurbon HORRY of Walsoken.

      Monumental Inscription: Holbeach Cemetery, Lincolnshire. Grave 67 I:
      IN
      LOVING MEMORY
      OF
      A DEVOTED MOTHER
      JUDITH LEWIN BYCROFT,
      WHO DIED 18th (sic) JANUARY 1914
      AGED 81 YEARS

      "ABSENT FROM THE BODY,
      PRESENT WITH THE LORD".

      The will of Judith Lewin BYCROFT:
      "This is the last Will and Testament of me Judith Lewin BYCROFT of Holbeach in the County of Lincoln Widow I revoke all my former Wills and Codicils I appoint my sons Robert John HORRY and Henry James HORRY to be the Trustees and Executors of this my last Will I bequeath all my Watches Jewels Trinkets personal ornaments wearing apparel and all my furniture plate plated goods linen glass china books pictures prints and all my garden tools implements and other effects of a like nature in and about the dwellinghouse and premises in my occupation unto my said sons Robert John HORRY and Henry James HORRY with the request that they will dispose of the same or such part thereof as shall be mentioned therein in accordance with any Memorandum or paper signed by me and deposited with this my Will or left among my papers at my death but such Memorandum shall not be deemed to form part of my Will or to have any testamentary character and the above expression of my wishes as to the disposal of the said articles and effects shall not create any trust or legal obligation And as to such part thereof as shall not be mentioned in the said Memorandum Upon trust to divide the same equally between and amongst such of my children as shall be living at my death Provided nevertheless that if any difficulty shall arise as to the said division I direct and empower the said Robert John HORRY anf Henry James HORRY to sell and convert into money such last mentioned portion of the Articles comprised in this bequest And to hold the net proceeds thereof In trust equally for such of my children as shall be living at my death I bequeath to each of my sons John Thurbon HORRY Arthur HORRY and Stanton HORRY the legacy of Two hundred pounds free from death duties to be paid to them respectively at the expiration of twelve calendar months after my death but in case any of my last mentioned three sons shall die in my lifetime then I bequeath the legacy intended for him to his child or children (if any) who shall be living at my decease and shall attain the age of twenty one years if more than one in equal shares I bequeath to my grandson George Cecil HORRY if and when he shall attain the age of twentyone years the legacy of Two hundred pounds free from death duties but such legacy shall not in any event become payable until after the expiration of twelve calendar months from my death And I devise and bequeath all my real estate and the residue of my personal estate charged with the payment of my funeral and testamentary expenses and debts including mortgage debts and the said Four legacies of Two hundred pounds each or such of them as shall become vested and payable and all death duties which shall become payable in respect of the whole of my property whether real or personal unto and to the use of my said sons Robert John HORRY and Henry James HORRY in equal shares as tenants in common absolutely if living at my death but in case one of my said last named two sons shall die in my lifetime leaving a child or children living at my death then I devise and bequeath my said real estate and the residue of my personal estate unto the survivor of them the said Robert John HORRY and Henry James HORRY but charged in addition to the above mentioned charges thereon with a further legacy or sum of Two hundred pounds which I bequeath to the children or child (if any) who shall be living at my decease and attain the age of twentyone years if more than one in equal shares of such one of my said sons Robert John HORRY and Henry James HORRY as shall have died in my lifetime I authorise my Trustees to determine what articles pass under any specific bequest contained in this my Will or any Codicil hereto and whether any moneys are to be considered as capital or income and to determine all questions and matters of doubt arising in the execution of the trusts of this my Will or any Codicil hereto And I declare that every such determination whether made upon a question actually raised or implied in the acts or proceedings of my Trustees shall be conclusive and binding on all persons interested under this my Will or any Codicil hereto In witness whereof I the said Judith Lewin BYCROFT the testatrix have to this my Will affixed my signature this twenty third day of November One thousand nine hundred and five."."
