    • JAMES EDGOOSE 1847-1892

James EDGOOSE was born at West Walton, Norfolk, on 2 April 1847, the illegitimate son of Patience EDGOOSE and her brother-in-law Robert EDGOOSE (proved by DNA tests in 2006).
      (GRO June Q 1847 [HUDSON] Wisbech 14 169)
Stanton EDGOOSE had married Patience HUDSON at West Walton on 31 October 1835, but he had died on 20 March 1845.

James, illegitimate son of Patience EDGOOSE of Walton, farmer, was baptised at West Walton, Norfolk, on 4 April 1847.
      (BTs)

      (RG9/1050/72/8)

According to his granddaughter Edith Naomi EDGOOSE he was not a strong man and became a gardener because it was feared that farming might be too strenuous. He added to his income by repairing boots in his spare time.

According to 'The Pubs, Inns and Taverns Index of England, 1801-1900' a James EDGOOSE was listed at the Dam Inn, West Walton, in 1869. This entry could instead refer to James Lewin EDGOOSE (1838-1906). Charlotte DEAN was the licensee by 1871.

On Thursday, 14 August 1870 at the Rose & Crown Hotel, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, James EDGOOSE of Shouldham, Norfolk, gardener, bought at auction Lot 26 in Cold Horn Field, Walsoken, Norfolk, for 215. This was part of the estate of the late W. E. A. COLVILE Esq.. The lot contained a cottage, with paddock and garden, which was in the tenure of Mr. John FARREN who was under notice to quit at the next Lady-Day. According to the sale particulars, the apportioned rent was 13.5s. and the tithe-rent charge 6s. The cottage and 0a. 3r. 14p. were copyhold of the Manor of Walsoken Popenhoe, the remainder freehold. The copyhold portion was subject to a quit-rent of 1s. per annun. Land-tax redeemed (Sale Particulars). He paid a deposit of 21.10.0. The balance seems to have been paid by instalments or by a loan from RICHARD LEEDER who was soon to become his father-in-law.

The banns of marriage between "James EDGOOSE Bachelor of this Parish and Julia Hannah LEEDER of the Parish of Acle" were called on the 11, 18, and 25 September 1870.
