  • Notes
    • ADELAIDE ELIZA EDGOOSE 1851-1941

      Adelaide Eliza EDGOOSE was born on 29 August 1851 at Northallerton, Yorkshire, daughter of Jesse and Mary EDGOOSE.
      (GRO December Q 1851 [WHARRAM] Northallerton 24 523)
      Jesse EDGOOSE had married Mary WHARRAM by licence on 7 August 1849.

      The 1861 census for 13 Feasegate, St. Peter the Little, York:
      Mary EDGOOSE, head, aged 40, widow, baby linen & hosiery repository, born at Naburn, Yorkshire;
      Alfred J. EDGOOSE, son, aged 17, house carpenter, born at Leak, Staffordshire;
      Agnes B. (sic) EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 15, milliner, born at Leak;
      *Adelaide E. EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 9, scholar, born at Northallerton, Yorkshire;
      Emily A. EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 6, scholar, born at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire;
      Lucilla F. EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 5, scholar, born at Naburn, Yorkshire;
      Harriet ATKIN, servant, aged 14, house servant, born at Cottingwith, Yorkshire.
      (RG9/3546/63/9)

      The reference to Alfred E. EDGOOSE at the York School of Art Annual Meeting in 1861 may perhaps have been a reference to Adelaide E. EDGOOSE. Her half brother Alfred James (sic) EDGOOSE was seventeen years old and a house carpenter, whereas Adelaide Eliza was by 1871 a teacher of English and drawing.
      "The chairman then addressed some suitable remarks to the pupils, urging that though much is due to talent, more is due to industry and perseverance and a determination to excel, if they wished to succeed. He afterwards distributed the prizes.........
      The following had registration cards awarded to them.........Alfred E. EDGOOSE."
      (The York Herald 29 June 1861)

      The exact identity of the A. EDGOOSE whose name featured in the 1865 examination results for Holgate Seminary, York, remains uncertain. The reference could be to Adelaide or, less probably, to either of her half sisters Agnes Rowley or Augusta.
      Second grammar and arithmetic 3. A. EDGOOSE
      Second history and georgraphy 1. A. EDGOOSE
      (The York Herald, 23 December 1865)

      The name of A. E. EDGOOSE is listed in the Holgate Seminary's examination results in June 1866.
      Grammar and arithmetic (1st class) 2. A. E. EDGOOSE
      Geography and history (1st class) 2. A. E. EDGOOSE
      2nd French A. E. EDGOOSE
      (The York Herald, 23 June 1866)

      The name of A. E. EDGOOSE is listed for the last time in the examination results published in December 1866.
      (The York Herald 22 December 1866)

      At the time of the 1871 census she was 19 years old, working as an assistant at a school in Church Yard, Selby, Yorkshire. She taught English and Drawing. Her place of birth was Northallerton.
      (RG10/4734/128/1)

      At the time of the 1881 census she was visiting the SHAFTOE family at 66 Monkgate, York St. Maurice, Yorkshire:
      Ann SHAFTOE, head, aged 72, widow, born at York;
      Maria SHAFTOE, daughter, aged 39, born at York;
      Elizabeth SHAFTOE, daughter, aged 32, born at York;
      Emily SHAFTOE, daughter, aged 29, born at York;
      *Adelaide EDGOOSE, visitor, aged 29, school teacher, born at Northallerton;
      Emma TIPLADY, aged 18, unmarried, general domestic servant, born at Welburn, York.
      (RG11/4722/88/23)
      Her mother and sisters were at 57 Monkgate, York, with several school boarders.
      (RG11/4722/100/10)

      At the time of the 1891 census she was at Providence House, Naburn, at the home of her cousin Maria WHARRAM. She was said to be 36 years old and 'living on own means' (RG12/3896/8/9).
      Also present were Maria WHARRAM, Head, Widow, aged 42, living on own means, born Escrick; her son Matthias WHARRAM, a 22 year old farmer, born Naburn; her son Thomas B. WHARRAM, an 18 year old chemist's apprentice, born Naburn; and a cook, a housemaid, and four farm servants.
      Her future husband was at Adeline Villa, Fleetwood, with his sister Louisa CROSBY, their 16 year old cousin Gertrude HOLDIFORTH, and their servant, a 47 year old widow born in Dublin in Ireland named Elizabeth PURCELL.
      (RG12/3457/35/24)

      She married Ernest CROSBY, a 30 year old solicitor of Adeline Villas, Fleetwood, on 22 April 1891 at the New Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, York. Ernest CROSBY was the bachelor son of John CROSBY, a merchant. George Thompson OLDHAM and LUCILLA Frances EDGOOSE were witnesses.

      "CROSBY - EDGOOSE. On the 22nd inst., at the New-street Wesleyan Chapel, York, by the Rev. T. F. RAWLINGS, Ernest CROSBY, solicitor, of Fleetwood, to Adelaide Eliza, third daughter of the late Rev. Jesse EDGOOSE, and granddaughter of the late Matthias WHARRAM, of Naburn."
      (The York Herald, 23 April 1891)

      There is no trace of an Adelaide Eliza CROSBY as such in the 1901 census. Her husband Ernest CROSBY, aged 40, a solicitor, born in Hull, Yorkshire, is listed at 5 Mount Road, Fleetwood, Lancashire, (RG13/3976/64/24). At the same address were a visitor, Bridjet CROW, aged 39, living on own means, born at Fleetwood; and Annie DUTTON, a 24 year old domestic servant born at Northwich, Cheshire. However, at the house of Robert KNAPTON in Beverley, Yorkshire, was an Adelaide E. (KNAPTON) aged 49, born Northallerton. She was married but nevertheless said to be the niece of the head of the household. The ditto marks for the surname indicate that all members of the household had the same surname KNAPTON, even the servant, indicating a possible error (RG13/4462/13). Further research has shown that Robert KNAPTON married Mary WHARRAM's sister Ann at Naburn, Yorkshire, on 12 July 1853 (IGI), so he was in fact Adelaide Eliza CROSBY's uncle by marriage.

      The 1911 census of Westaella, Fleetwood, Lancashire:
      Ernest CROSBY, head, aged 50, married, solicitor, employer, born at Hull, Yorkshire;
      *Adelaide Eliza CROSBY, wife, aged 53, married 19 years, no children, born at Northallerton, Yorkshire;
      Isabel LAMB, servant, aged 21, single, general servant domestic, born at Fleetwood, Lancashire.
      (RG14/25457)

      Her husband, Ernest CROSBY, practised alone at Fleetwood from 1883-1909. From 1909-1912 he was a partner in Crosby and Hodson of Blackpool and Thornton-le-Fylde. From 1912 he practised alone at Manchester until his death. His last address was 20 St. Ann's Square, Manchester. He died on 27 November 1930 aged 72 and was buried in Manchester Southern Cemetery. His address at the time was 2 Amherst Road, Withington, Manchester.

      She and her husband laid the foundation stones of the New Fleetwood Wesleyan Church.

      Adelaide Eliza CROSBY, widow, of 3 Sandy Lane, Pendleton, Salford, was granted probate of the will of Agnes Rowley EDGOOSE on 25 October 1933.

      From the 1939 Register of 33 Galloway Road, Fleetwood M.B., Lancashire:
      John W. HODSON, born 6 May 1883, solicitor, married;
      Sarah L. HODSON, born 8 January 1881, unpaid domestic duties, married;
      Catherine M. FRYER (CARTMELL), born 21 October 1921, domestic servant, single;
      1 CLOSED RECORD
      *Adelaide E. CROSBY, born 29 August 1851, oap incapacitated, widowed.
      (RG101/4763H/011/17 NURM)

      She died on 4 March 1941 at Melville Nursing Home, Fleetwood. Her address was given as Grasmere Bungalow, Beach Road, Fleetwood, and her former address as 3 Sandy Lane, Eccles Old Road, Salford.
      (GRO June Q 1891 9d 83)

      No. 2 Grasmere Bungalow, Beach Road, Fleetwood, was occupied by a Miss Mabel POPE and her friend Miss HUDSON, a sister-in-law of W. WARD the trawler owner. After Miss HUDSON died, Mabel POPE looked after Adelaide Eliza CROSBY.
      (Letter from Mrs. Ingela Shaw 10.3.1970)

      She is buried in grave L489 in the nonconformist section of Manchester Southern Cemetery, Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. There is no mention of her on the headstone.

      She left her real and personal estate to Samuel IRWIN of 40 King Street, Manchester, the solicitor who had drawn up the will of her sister Agnes Rowley EDGOOSE. She made her own will on 7 November 1933.
      "THIS IS THE LAST WILL of me Adelaide Eliza CROSBY of 3 Sandy Lane Eccles Old Road in the City of Salford Widow
      1. I HEREBY REVOKE all former wills and testamentary dispositions heretofore made by me
