Notes |
- BENJAMIN BALES 1781 or 1782-1866
A Benjamin BALES married Ann WOODLAND at St. Alban's, Hertfordshire, on 3 January 1814, and a Benjamin BALES died in 1840.
(GRO March Q 1840 Bury St. Edmunds 13 312).
This seems unlikely to be the same Benjamin BALES but the wife of his son Benjamin appears to have come from Hitchin in Hertfordshire and to have given birth to a son there.
(1851 census: HO 107/2096/400).
An Ann WOODLAND was baptised at St. Alban's Abbey on 2 July 1790, daughter of William & Sarah WOODLAND.
According to the 1841 census of Spalding, Lincolnshire, he was a cottager born outside the county of Lincolnshire. Living with him were Ann BALES, Ann BALES, Eliza BALES, Benjamin BALES, Mary BALES, Daniel BALES, Sarah HARDWICK, and Ann JOHNSON female servant. Sarah HARDWICK was described as a staymaker. Next door was Jane BALES, a female servant (HO 107/610/4/31).
The family was living at Bourn Road, Spalding in 1851:
*Benjamin BALES, head, aged 69, cottager, born at Lynn, Norfolk;
Ann BALES, wife, aged 59, staymaker, born at Stamford, Rutlandshire;
David BALES, son, aged 18, son at home, born at Spalding;
Benjamin BALES, son, aged 25, married, son at home, born at Spalding;
Elizabeth BALES, wife, aged 18, married, cottager's wife, born at Hitchin, Hertfordshire;
Benjamin BALES, grandson, aged 7 months, at home, born at Hitchin;
Emily Ann PERKINS, visitor, aged 9, scholar, born at Spalding;
Sarah RUFF, servant, aged 18, general servant, born at Northampton.
(HO107/2096/400)
(Emily Ann PERKINS may have been a relative of the Sarah Ann PERKINS who was staying with Richard PEACOCK and his wife Sarah PEACOCK nee BALES at the time of the 1861 census.)
The 1861 census of Bourn Road, Spalding:
Benjamin BALES, head, aged 79, cottager, born at Long Sutton, Lincolnshire;
Ann BALES, wife, aged 69, corset maker, born at Stamford, Lincolnshire.
(RG9/2323/39/2)
His death aged 85 was registered in 1866.
(GRO March Q 1866 Spalding 7a 219 aged 85)
(revised 22.05.2005)
