    Descendants of Elizabeth EDGOOSE (1819-1899) and Daniel O'CONNOR (died 1910)

  • Notes
    • ELIZABETH O'CONNOR née EDGOOSE 1819-1899

      Elizabeth EDGOOSE was born on 5 September 1819.
      (Source: West family bible)

      Elizabeth was baptised at Gosberton, Lincolnshire, on 19 September 1819, daughter of James and Mary EDGOOSE of Gosberton. Her father was described as a yeoman.
      (PR)
      James EDGOOSE had married Mary WINFREE by licence at Moulton, Lincolnshire, on 14 December 1807.

      From the 1841 census returns for Gosberton Risegate:
      *Elizabeth EDGOOSE, aged 20, dressmaker, born in Lincolnshire;
      Elmet (sic) EDGOOSE, aged 15, agricultural labourer, born in Lincolnshire;
      Kezia EDGOOSE, aged 15, born in Lincolnshire;
      Kerenhappuch EDGOOSE, aged 13, born in Lincolnshire;
      John EDGOOSE, aged 10, born in Lincolnshire.
      (HO107/607/11/31)
      Their mother Mary EDGOOSE was elsewhere.

      On 1 June 1842 she was a witness at the marriage of her brother Albert EDGOOSE to Sarah HARDWICK at Spalding, Lincolnshire.

      At the time of the 1851 census she was a 31 year old governess at Newland, Yorkshire, working for William VILLANE, a farmer of 200 acres employing 6 labourers. Her place of birth was Gosberton, Lincolnshire.
      (HO107/2351/38/11)

      Elizabeth EDGOOSE, aged 30, a Wesleyan, arrived at Hobart, Tasmania, on the barquentine Wellington on 26 November 1855, after a voyage which began at London Dock, Wapping, on 7 August. According to the records, she gave her occupation as a governess, and she could read and write. Lincolnshire was her native place (Leicestershire was altered to Lincolnshire, which suggests that she was living with one of her sisters in Leicester immediately before emigrating). She was sent out on the application of John DICKENSON (See Note below).
      (C.B. 7/18 Archives Office of Tasmania)

      She married Daniel O'CONNOR, a draper, in the house of Mr. Thomas HOLLANDS, Church Street, Hobart, on 7 August 1862. They married by licence according to the rites of the Church of Scotland. Thomas HOLLANDS and Sarah A. HEYWARD were witnesses. According to her granddaughter Ethel O'CONNOR she met her future husband in Melbourne.
      (Letter 17 July 1970)

      They had one son, Herbert O'CONNOR, on 4 October 1864. He became a teacher and lived in Burwood, Sydney, Australia.

      She was living at Winfrey Cottage, Newland Street, Waverley, Sydney, when her sister Jemima WADE wrote to her in September 1895.

      She died at Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, on 21 May 1899 and was buried in the Wesleyan Cemetery there on 22 May 1899.

      NOTES & QUERIES:
      John DICKENSON: He married Charlotte ROWLEY, sister of the Eliza ROWLEY who was the first wife of Elizabeth EDGOOSE's brother Jesse. He and Charlotte emigrated to Tasmania, Australia, at some time between the 1851 census of England & Wales and the birth of their child at Hobart Town in 1854. See also Mary Ann Caroline ROWLEY who married Henry DICKENSON in 1841 and gave birth to her first child in Hobart Town in 1842.

      See also two letters written by Elizabeth EDGOOSE's only granddaughter Ethel O'Connor (1894-1977). Ethel O'CONNOR's reference to the Mrs. ASHE remains a mystery.
