    STANTON CHARLES EDGOOSE (1880-1917) to ANGELINA STEEL nee CROSBY (1869-1942) AUGUST 1917

    Stanton Charles Edgoose was gassed in the trenches in the First World War. This was his last letter to Angelina, the mother of his daughter Jessie: "Dear Lena, Just a Line to tell you that I am getting on all right Rfmn S C EDGOOSE 307662 West Yorks GO 5 VA Hospital 9 Ward Exeter. If you can will you send me that hollow ground razor as I have lost mine(?)"

      Angelina CROSBY, daughter of George Pinch CROSBY, a farm labourer, and Mary Jane CROSBY nee OLDMAN was born at Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire, England, on 10 July 1869.

      Angelina CROSBY married Charles SYKES at the parish church of Sutton St. Matthew, Sutton Bridge on 24 October 1887. Charles SYKES was described as a 25 year old bachelor, a painter of St. John, Barnsley, and son of William SYKES, keeper. Angelina CROSBY was 18 years old, a spinster of Sutton St. Matthew, daughter of labourer George CROSBY. Witnesses were Edward SMITH and Fanny SMITH.

      Henry NEGUS, aged 28, shoemaker, born at Northampton;
      Priscilla NEGUS, aged 32, born in Leicestershire.

      Their son Ralph SYKES was born in 1893.

      Their son Harry SYKES was born at 19 Nene Parade, Wisbech, on 16 March 1894. Charles SYKES was described as a licensed victualler. The informant was his mother Angelina SYKES formerly CROSBY of 19 Nene Parade.

      Charles SYKES died at 19 Nene Parade, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, on 20 October 1894. He was described as a 30 year old licensed victualler. His sister Priscilla NEGUS of 30 Askew Crescent, Shepherds Bush, London, was present when he died.

      Angelina SYKES described herself as a 26 year old widow when she married John Thomas Bartie COTTRELL, a 31 year old dealer from St. Augustine, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, and son of farmer John COTTRELL, at St. Augustine's Parish Church, Wisbech, on 11 August 1895. She was also of St. Augustine's, Wisbech, daughter of labourer George CROSBY. Witnesses were Harry NEGUS and Nora CROSBY.

      John COTTRELL died at 19 Nene Parade, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, on 25 January 1900 aged 38. He was described as a 38 year old licensed victualler. E. WRIGHT-SCALES of 12 Bannisters Row, Leverington, was present when he died.

      She married Thomas Samuel STEEL, a 23 year old mariner of Nene Parade, Wisbech, at Wisbech on 19 November 1900. He was the son of Samuel STEEL, clerk.

      Her husband Thomas Samuel STEEL(E) died at some time after the 1901 census and presumably before she conceived Stanton Charles EDGOOSE's daughter Jessie in late December 1904. The GRO indexes have been searched in vain from June 1901 to December 1904.

      The birth certificate of her daughter Jessie Edgoose STEEL shows Angelina STEEL to have been living at "Back of 52 Queen Street", Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Her daughter was born there on 22 September 1905. She gives her maiden name as CROSBY and the father of her child as Charles Edgoose STEEL. He was of course Stanton Charles EDGOOSE.

      The Register of Electors lists her at 85 Ayscough Street, Grimsby, from 1913 until 1935. In Kelly's Directories of Lincolnshire and Hull for 1922 and 1926 she is listed at that address as Mrs. Angelina EDGOOSE, fried fish dealer. The Grimsby & Cleethorpes Directories for 1922-3, 1923 and 1935-6 list her as Mrs. A. EDGOOSE, widow.

      ..........Grimsby, yesterday, Hans KRUTMAN, a naturalised Britisher, who was born in Russia, was fined 50s. for assaulting Angelina EDGOOSE, a married woman, whom he was said to have knocked down. Defendant said that he pushed complainant to restrain her from entering...........

      She died on 31 December 1942 at 90 Corporation Road, Grimsby, at the age of 73 and was buried in Scartho Road Cemetery, Grave 124 N 1. Her death certificate names her as Angelina STEEL, widow of Thomas Samuel STEEL, a merchant seaman. Her son, H. SYKES of 91 Harold Street, Grimsby, informed the registrar.

      When and where did Thomas Samuel STEEL die? Did he die at sea?
      Her daughter Jessie knew that her mother had had children by an earlier marriage before she went to live with Stanton Charles EDGOOSE. She told me so.
