    • JOHN EDGOOSE 1794-1819

      John, son of John and Sarah HEADGOOSE of Alderchurch Fen, was baptised at Swineshead, Lincolnshire, on 15 February 1794. John EDGOOSE had married Sarah LAWSON at Sutterton, Lincolnshire, on 19 July 1791. He was baptised again at Algarkirk on 28 May 1798 with his brother William, and there is a note in the register that he was born on 2 February 1794.

      A bastardy recognizance dated 12 July 1814: John EDGOOSE the Elder of Clayhills was surety for John EDGOOSE the Younger of Toynton All Saints:
      "Parts of Lindsey County of Lincoln - Be it Remembered that on the Twelth Day of July in the Year of our Lord 1814. John EDGOOSE the Elder of Clayhills in the Parish of Algarkirk in the wapentake of Kirton in the parts of Holland in the said County yeoman and John EDGOOSE the younger of Tointon All saints in the said parts of Lindsey Yeoman personally came before me one of his Majesty's Justices of the peace for the said parts of Lindsey and acknowledged themselves to owe to our Sovereign Lord the King, vizt. the said John EDGOOSE the Elder the Sum of One Hundred pounds and the said John EDGOOSE the younger the Sum of Fifty pounds of lawful Money of England to be made and levied on their respective Goods and Chattels Lands and Tenements to the Use of our said Lord the King his Heirs and Successors if he the said John EDGOOSE the younger shall make default in the Condition hereunder written.
      The Condition of this Recognizance is such that if the said John EDGOOSE the younger do and shall appear at the next General Quarter Sessions of the peace to be holden at Spilsby in and for the said parts of Lindsey and abide and perform such Order or Orders as shall be made in pursuance of An Act passed in the Eighteenth Year of the Reign of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth concerning Bastards begotten and Born out of lawful Matrimony upon the Complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Friskney in the said parts of Lindsey for begetting a Bastard Child or Children on the body of Eleanor BREWSTER Singlewoman Which said Child or Children is or are likely to be Born a Bastard or Bastards and to become Chargeable to the said parish of Friskney Then this Recognizance to be void otherwise of Force

      "Parts of Lindsey County of Lincoln - To the Justices Assembled at the General Quarter Sessions of the peace to be holden at Spilsby in the said parts on the Nineteen Day of July 1814.
      I one of His Majesty's Justices of the peace Acting in and for the said parts this Twelth Day of July Instant Do hereby certify that it hath been proovd before me upon the Oath of one Credible Witness - that Eleanor BREWSTER of Friskney in the said parts had not then been Delivered of a Bastard Child which she the said Eleanor BREWSTER hath charged John EDGOOSE of Tointon ALL Saints in the said parts labourer with having gotten.
      He the said John EDGOOSE having entered into a Recognizance according to the Statute in that Case made and provided, Therefore humbly prayeth that the Justices Assembled as aforesaid would be pleased to Respite the said Recognizance.

      "Parts of Lindsey County of Lincoln - To the Justices Assembled at the General Quarter Sessions of the peace holden at Louth in the said parts on the Twenty fifth Day of October 1814.
      Whereas John EDGOOSE the younger late of Toynton All Saints in the said parts Labourer being charged with having gotten Eleanor BREWSTER of Friskney in the said parts Singlewoman with Child stood bound in Recognizance to appear at the General Quarter Sessions of the peace held at Spilsby on the Nineteenth Day of July last and to abide by such Order or Orders as should be made in Pursuance of An Act passed in the Eighteenth year of the Reign of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth concerning Bastards begotten and Born out of lawful Matrimony.
      We two of His Majesty's Justices of the peace Acting Acting in and for the said parts Do hereby Certify that the said Eleanor BREWSTER having been Delivered of a Female Bastard Child an Order of Filiation hath been duly made on the said John EDGOOSE pursuant to the Statute in that case made and provided, The said John EDGOOSE therefore humbly prayeth that the said Justices Assembled as aforesaid will be pleased wholly to discharge his said Recognizance - Given under our Hands this Twentysixth Day of September 1814.

      On 26 September 1814 John EDGOOSE the younger, late of Toynton All Saints, labourer, was ordered to pay three shillings a week to the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of Friskney, Lincolnshire, towards the maintenance of the daughter of Eleanor BREWSTER. Eleanor BREWSTER claimed that John EDGOOSE the younger was the father of her daughter who was born on 22 August 1814.

      Eleanor BREWSTER married Benjamin YOUNG at Friskney on 6 June 1815.

      A Holbeach bachelor John EDGOOSE married Holbeach spinster Sarah MILAND by banns at Holbeach, Lincolnshire, on 8 February 1819. He was unable to write his name. Witnesses were William PARKER, Edward [?????], Ann HOULDEN?, and John KITCHIN.

      John EDGOOSE of Algarkirk Fen was buried at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, on 27 February 1819 at the age of 26.
