  • Notes
    • JOEL EDGOOSE 1804-1883

      Joel EDGOOSE was born at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, on 19 January 1804.

      He was baptised at Swineshead, Lincolnshire, on 27 February 1805, son of John and Sarah EDGOOSE of Algarkirk.
      (PR)
      John EDGOOSE had married Sarah LAWSON at Sutterton, Lincolnshire, on 19 July 1791.

      Joel EDGOOSE appeared at Holland Quarter Sessions in June 1826: "Against Joel EDGOOSE late of Wigtoft labourer for an assault on Robert ASPLIN. A true bill - the said Joel EDGOOSE appeared and submitted. fined - 5 and imprisoned until paid. Mitigated to 1d (?) which was paid in court" (HQS minute book 1826). Robert ASPLIN, the Algarkirk pinder, was "violently assaulted and beaten" at Wigtoft by Joel EDGOOSE at eight o'clock on the evening of Tuesday 20 June 1826. Joel EDGOOSE was variously said to be from Algarkirk, Sutterton, or "late of Wigtoft".
      (HQS A/1/1826 BOSTON MIDS 35, 36, 37 and 38)

      There is little doubt about the identity of the EDGOOSE named in the following short article which appeared in the London newspaper The Standard on 13 November 1828:
      "OUTRAGEOUS VIOLENCE OF THE LABOURING NAVIGATORS NEAR BARTON
      On Monday, the 3d inst-, four of the bankers commenced a violent attack upon two others, who were new comers upon the work, under the pretence of shoeing them; -and, at last, took away a watch and silk handkerchief belonging to the two men. On the following day two of the fellows, who had been the ringleaders of the assault and robbery, were apprehended; one of them is named EDGOOSE, the other is known by the bankers as Long Bill. They were brought before the magistrates for the parts of Holland, compelled to make restoration of the property which they had retained, and fines were imposed, which, with costs, amounted to nearly 4l (4).

      Joel and his sister Elizabeth were witnesses to the marriage of Peter EDGOOSE and Eleanor WARD at Algarkirk on 16 June 1829.

      At Holland Quarter Sessions at Boston on 18 October 1831 his father John EDGOOSE (1766-1833) was sentenced to be transported for 7 years. Two witnesses for the prosecution, William TAYLOR and Haspin DICKINSON, gave evidence on oath that Joel EDGOOSE climbed up onto the haystack, threw down a quantity of hay, and carried it out of the field whilst his father held open the gate.
      (HQS A/1/1831 BOSON/Mich/31 & 32)

      This may have been what prompted him to leave Lincolnshire and seek work in Newport, Shropshire, where the Newport branch of the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal was being built. Here he met Mary Elizabeth Grace JONES and here their daughter Sarah EDGOOSE was born in 1832 or 1833 (Source: 1851 census returns for Hammond Beck, Swineshead). However, no trace of the marriage of Joel EDGOOSE and Mary JONES has ever been found, nor of the baptism of their daughter. Perhaps Mary JONES was, as Clara Strohmeier CLARK claimed in 1972, a Roman Catholic, but Valetta POWELL's notes say she was brought up a Methodist even though her mother Grace O'GRADY was an Irish Catholic.

      Their son John EDGOOSE was born in 1834 and was baptised at St. Hilda's, Hartlepool, County Durham, on 18 February 1835. He was said to be from Croft, and the son of Joel EDGOOSE, excavator, and Mary JONES. He died at Gilesgate Moor, Durham, on 2 December 1839 aged 5. Joel EDGOOSE was described as a railway labourer on his son's death certificate.

      James, son of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born in the City of Durham on 1 March 1837 and baptised at Durham St. Giles on 4 December 1839 with his brother John R. EDGOOSE

      Robert, son of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born at Gilesgate Moor, Durham, on 23 October 1839. He was called Robert at birth, but seems to have become John or John Robert after the death of his brother John on 2 December 1839. Joel EDGOOSE was described as a railway labourer on his son's birth certificate.
      (GRO December Q 1839 Durham 24 67)

      From the 1841 census of Hart Street, Hartlepool, County Durham, taken on 6 June 1841:
      *Joel EDGOOSE (Ancestry has Edgeman), aged 30, labourer, not born in County Durham;
      Mary EDGOOSE, aged 25, not born in County Durham;
      Sarah EDGOOSE, aged 8, not born in County Durham;
      James EDGOOSE, aged 4, born in County Durham;
      John EDGOOSE, aged 2, born in County Durham.
      (HO107/315/20/45/16)

      Alice, daughter of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born at Gibbet Hills, Swineshead, Lincolnshire, on 17 March 1842. Joel EDGOOSE was described as a labourer on the birth certificate.
      (GRO March Q 1842 Boston 14 264)

      Joel, son of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born at Royalty, Swineshead, on 8 August 1844. Joel EDGOOSE senior was described as a labourer on his son's birth certificate.
      (GRO September Q 1844 Boston 14 248)

      Alice EDGOOSE. daughter of James and Abigail EDGOOSE of Tumby, referred in her will dated 11 April 1842 to her niece Elizabeth "the wife of John CROFT"; to her nephews Joel and Jonathan EDGOOSE; and to her sister Mary EDGOOSE. She died at Algarkirk Fen on 24 May 1845.
      (LCC Will 1845 99)

      In 1846 Joel EDGOOSE occupied two cottages in the parish of Swineshead. The first was a cottage and garden belonging to William Jenkins HARRISON in Swineshead itself. The second was in the extra-parochial place (adjoining the West Low Grounds in the parish of Swineshead) called Brand End Plot. This second cottage and garden also belonged to John William Jenkins HARRISON

      Mary ELIZABETH, daughter of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born at Royalty, Swineshead, on 11 April 1847. Joel EDGOOSE was described as a labourer on the birth certificate.
      (GRO June Q 1847 Boston 14 174 or 274)

      Robert EDGOOSE, grandson, aged 3, born at Swineshead;
      Jonathan EDGOOSE, son, aged 7 months, born at Swineshead.
      (HO107/2099/633)

      Elizabeth, daughter of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born at Swineshead on 16 November 1852. Joel EDGOOSE was described as a labourer.
      (GRO December Q 1852 Boston 7a 358)

      "County Court. - This court was held on Thursday, before J. G. S. SMITH, Esq., judge.
      - ASPLAND v. HEADGOOSE (Jos): Claim 2l. 5s. 6d. The parties reside at Swineshead. The alleged debt was for meat supplied several years ago. His honour did not appear satisfied with the way in which plaintiff kept his books, and there adjourned the case until next court day, intimating that HEADGOOSE might, previous to that time, plead the statute of limitations."
      (Lincolnshire Chronicle, 18 August 1854)
      (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk)

      William, son of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born at Algarkirk Fen on 8 October 1855. Joel EDGOOSE was described as a husbandman on the birth certificate.
      (GRO December Q 1855 Boston 7a 348)

      Harriet, daughter of Joel and Mary EDGOOSE, was born at Algarkirk Fen on 14 November 1858. Joel EDGOOSE was described as a farm labourer on the birth certifiate.
      (GRO December Q 1858 Boston 7a 340)
      There is a reference in Boston Workhouse Minutes to a meeting held on 4 December 1858 at which out relief was granted to Joel EDGOOSE of Algarkirk on account of his wife's childbirth.

      According to Clara Strohmeier CLARK of Aberdeen, South Dakota, USA, her grandfather was a "bridge building architect who used to drink too much and who started a boys' boarding school on a farm. He had eleven children. He was a bellringer at Algarkirk for 37 years and used to walk 10 miles to church every Sunday. Once, when he had broken his leg, some parishioners are reported to have remarked that it could not be Joel EDGOOSE who was ringing the bells. He had land on both sides of a 40 foot wide or 40 foot deep sluice". (Visit to South Dakota March 1972)

      He was described as a 57 year old agricultural labourer in the 1861 census returns for Sutterton, Lincolnshire:
      *Joel EDGOOSE, head, married, aged 57, agricultural labourer, born at Algarkirk;
      Mary EDGOOSE, wife, married, aged 47, born at Newport, Hampshire (sic);
      Joel EDGOOSE, son, unmarried, aged 16, born at Algarkirk;

      (RG9/2340/68/10)

      In 1871 he was living at Maryland Bank, Algarkirk Fen:
      *Joel EDGOOSE, head, married, aged 67, labourer, born at Algarkirk Fen;
      Mary EDGOOSE, wife, married, aged 57, labourer, born at Newport, Salop, South Wales (sic!);
      Jonathan EDGOOSE, son, aged 20, labourer, born at Swineshead.
      (RG10/3346/87/3)

      According to the 1881 census of Algarkirk and Amber Hill, Lincolnshire, Joel was 77 years old, a farm labourer, born at Algarkirk Fen.
      His wife Mary was 67 years old, a British subject born "At Sea".
      (RG11/3220/150/4)

      The Lincolnshire, Rutland, and Stamford Mercury 7 December 1883:
      "MARRIAGES
      COCKER-EDGOOSE - On the 5th inst., at the parish church, Hathersage, Derbyshire, John Armstrong COCKER, merchant and manufacturer, of Hathersage, to Harriet EDGOOSE, youngest daughter of Joel EDGOOSE, of Algarkirk Fen, Lincolnshire."

      He died aged 80 at Amber Hill, Swineshead, on 24 December 1883 within a few days of a visit from his daughter Harriet and her new husband John Armstrong COCKER. Cause of death was senile decay. Occupation: farm labourer. Susan ASHBY of Amber Hill was present and informed the registrar.
      (GRO December Q 1883 Boston 7a 240)

      "Joel EDGOOSE of Algarkirk Fen" was buried at Algarkirk on 28 December aged 80. In 1968 his tombstone was still standing against the churchyard wall.

      NOTES & QUERIES:
      The Gwynne Marriage Index 1813-1837 covering the whole of Shropshire has been searched in vain for Joel EDGOOSE's marriage to Mary JONES.

      A photograph of a mourning card commemorating Dorinder Hudson CROFT who died on 9 July 1873 was found amongst photographs to be scanned. It could have come from my visit to Aberdeen, South Dakota, or to Edinburgh or Lincolnshire. She was 25 years old and had been interred at Attercliffe Church, Sheffield.

      The 1871 census of Star Lode Drove, Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire:
      William CROFT, head, married, aged 23, a groundkeeper, born at Bicker Lincolnshire;
      Drinder H. CROFT, wife, married, aged 23, groundkeeper's wife, born at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire.
      (RG10/3318/ /10)

      The marriage of William CROFT to Drinda Hudson FLATTERS was registered in 1869.
      (GRO June Q 1869 Boston 7a 666)

      From the 1861 census of Algarkirk Fen:
      William FLATTERS, head, aged 41, labourer, born at Billinghay, Lincolnshire;
      Derrinder FLATTERS, daughter, aged 13, born at Algarkirk Fen, Lincolnshire.
      (RG9/2340/79/4)

      From the 1851 census of Hammond Beck, Swineshead, Lincolnshire:
      William FLATTERS, head, married, aged 32, agricultural labourer, born at Billinghay, Lincolnshire;
      Elizabeth FLATERS, wife, married, aged 41, born at Wigtoft, Lincolnshire;
      Mary J. FLATTERS, daughter, aged 9, born at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire;
      Eliza A. FLATTERS, daughter, aged 8, born at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire
      Abraham FLATTERS, son, aged 6, born at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire;
      Dorinda FLATTERS, daughter, aged 3, born at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire.
      (HO107/2099/633/10)

      And the connection between Dorinder Hudson CROFT and the EDGOOSE family is that she lived next door to Joel and Mary EDGOOSE in 1851.
