    • PETER EDGOOSE 1809-1840


      Peter EDGOOSE was born in 1809, son of John EDGOOSE labourer and Sarah née LAWSON who had married at Sutterton, Lincolnshire, on 19 July 1791. He was baptised at St. Botolph's, Boston, Lincolnshire, on 23 April 1809.

      He married Helen (or Ellen or Eleanor) WARD, spinster, daughter of Richard and Mary WARD, on 16 June 1829 at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire. Witnesses were Joel EDGOOSE and Elizabeth EDGOOSE.

      From the Lincoln, Rutland & Stamford Mercury, Friday 14 February 1834:
      'At the Police Office in Bridge Street, Boston, on Wednesday last, Peter EDGOOSE was charged with trespassing on the land of of Mr Samuel EVERARD of that place and was convicted in the penalty of £2 with eighteen shillings costs and in default of an immediate payment was ordered to be imprisoned for two months to hard labour.'

      From 'Sentences under the Game Laws', House of Correction, Skirbeck, 1 November 1833 to 1 March 1836, page 51:
      Peter EDGOOSE was convicted on 14 January 1835 and fined £5 and £1.14s. for costs, and in default of payment imprisoned and kept to hard labour for two calendar months.

      'The several convictions of Peter EDGOOSE, John RICHARDSON, William TUNNARD and William HALL for offences against the game laws to be filed' - Easter Sessions, Boston, 7 April 1835.

      'The Parts of Holland in the County of Lincoln to wit Be it remembered that on the fourteenth Day of January in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five at Boston in the Parts of Holland in the County of Lincoln aforesaid Peter EDGOOSE is convicted before us The Reverend Basil BERIDGE and Martin SHEATH Clerks two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for the Parts of Holland aforesaid for that he the said Peter EDGOOSE did on the twenty ninth Day of December in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty four at the Parish of Sutterton in the Parts of Holland and County of Lincoln aforesaid use a Gun for the purpose of killing Game the said Peter EDGOOSE not being authorized so to do for want of a Game Certificate contrary to the Statute in such Case made and provided And we do adjudge that the said Peter EDGOOSE shall for the said Offence forfeit the sum of Five Pounds and shall forthwith pay the said sum together with the sum of One Pound and fourteen shillings for Costs And that in default of immediate payment of the said Sums he the said Peter EDGOOSE shall be Imprisoned and kept to hard Labor (sic) in the House of Correction at Skirbeck Quarter in the said Parts and County for the space of two calendar months unless the said sums shall be sooner paid And we direct that the said sum of Five Pounds shall be paid to Samuel BREWSTER being one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Sutterton aforesaid in which the said Offence was committed to be by him applied according to the directions of the Statute in such Case made and provided And we order that the said Sum of One Pound and fourteen shillings for Costs shall be paid to Joseph POCKLINGTON Given under our Hands the Day and Year first above written'.

      He died in the extra-parochial district adjoining Fosdyke Fen on 30 January 1840 at the age of 29. On his death certificate he was described as a labourer. Jonathan EDGOOSE of Algarkirk Fen was present when he died and informed the registrar.

      Peter EDGOOSE of Algarkirk Fen was buried at Algarkirk, Lincolnshire, on 2 February 1840 aged 29.

      His widow Ellen EDGOOSE had a daughter Harriet by her brother-in-law Jonathan EDGOOSE on 11 October 1843.
